Will this replace a true surround sound system?
Probably not.
But here are my honest thoughts on the Monoprice SB-600 Dolby Atmos 5.1.2 Sound bar.
All movies are not encoded the same, so sound quality will be different for each movie.
The downside to this sound bar is there doesn’t seem to be a way to update with new features.
Even though I was told by someone at Monoprice that this sound bar supports DTS/DTS:X, I’ve read from other reviewers that it does not.
This has been confirmed as not supporting DTS and DTS:X.
As of 3/31/2021, the sound bar is having issues connecting with my Sony X900H TV. The TV will constantly switch back and forth between the internal speakers and the sound bar speakers. I’ve never had this problem in the past and can’t seem to figure out why this is having.
As of 5/13/2021, the sound bar didn’t work out and has been replaced by the Denon AVR-X3700H AV Receiver and is currently listed on eBay for sale.
The Good
- Dolby Vision passthrough
- Dolby Atmos support
- Solid dialogue representation from the bar (represents the center and left/right front speakers)
- Solid bass output from Subwoofer
The Bad
- Surround speakers are useless unless they’re really close to the listener. Also, I’m hearing a mild crackle sound coming from the speakers.
- Connectivity issues, especially with subwoofer
- No DTS support. Defaults to PCM audio.
- No DTS:X support. Defaults to PCM audio.
- No GUI interface.
- Doesn’t seem to be a way to update the sound bar via firmware.
- Limited customizations.
- Auto shut off.
